TOM PHARDEL: SCULPTURE
The sculptor Tom Phardel has been Chair of the Ceramics Department of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan since 1988. He has shown widely in both Michigan and in every significant contemporary gallery of legend in Detroit’s past since he left the University of Michigan with an MFA in 1977. He has been more than generous with his time in supporting Michigan ceramics, occasionally organizing exhibitions of other artists’ work, and has received numerous exhibition and purchase awards during his long career, including being invited to The Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan to work, and an NEA grant for a summer residency at the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana. He was commissioned to produce one of the fabled ceramic tile murals in Detroit’s People Mover Stations in the 1980s, when he formed his long relationship with Pewabic Pottery, where he has been in numerous group exhibitions, and to which he frequently brings his students. This is his first completely solo exhibition in Detroit.
